Children from a south Wales school destroyed by fire last week are to return to class.

Governors of Tylorstown Primary School met on Tuesday to approve plans drawn up by the council's education service and school staff.

On Wednesday, the pupils will be split between two neighbouring schools.

Transport will be provided to take the children to school and bring them home. Classroom furniture and equipment has been acquired so lessons can start at once.

Gutted by fire

Chairman of the school's governors Councillor Robert Bevan said: "I don't think seen so much emotion, the people of the village are genuinely upset about it all.

"Although we have to let the emotions come out we must also not allow what has happened to stop us making plans for the return of the children to classes and the return of Tylorstown Primary School."

Tylorstown Primary School in the Rhondda Valley was gutted in a fire during the early hours of last Thursday.

Rebuild

Fifty firefighters spent four hours bringing the fire under control, but the building could not be saved.

Up to 80% of the school was badly damaged in the fire, although no-one was injured.

The Victorian building had only recently undergone a £340,000 refurbishment to make room for more pupils.

The remains of the burned out school were demolished on the weekend. Plans to rebuild the school are being drawn up, but contruction will cost at least £1.5m and could take up to two years.
