An investigation is beginning after a three-year-old girl and a man died after plunging 50ft (15m) from a waterfall into a river in north Wales.

The pair, thought to be a 33-year-old father and his daughter, were on holiday at a nearby campsite in Llanbedr near Harlech, Gwynedd.

They were reported missing on Saturday, and their bodies were later found in a pool beneath a waterfall.

North Wales Police say the deaths were being treated as a tragic accident.

Fire service search teams, a police helicopter, ambulance crews and two trained divers launched a major search operation after police received a call reporting that a man and a child had fallen 50ft from a waterfall into a pool below.

'Dangers'

It was two hours later that the bodies of the pair were found.

Alan Edwards, fire service community safety manager, said: "At 17.56 (BST) two bodies were recovered from the river.

"This tragic incident highlights the dangers of swimming in unknown waters and venturing in the locality of any unknown waters.

"We would ask everybody to take extra care when near water."

North Wales Police said a joint investigation into the incident was being carried out by the force and the local authority. The Health and Safety Executive had been made aware and inquiries were ongoing.
