Youths reported after Pc's road death
![]() The police car overturned as it followed another vehicle
Two 17-year-old boys have been reported for driving offences after a South Wales Police officer was killed in a car crash.
Pc Garry Wozencroft, 35, from Neath, was killed when the Peugeot car he was travelling in crashed as it followed a Vauxhall Cavalier along Neath Road, Port Talbot, south Wales. Police say the youths, who are both from Swansea, have been reported for dangerous driving and other associated road traffic offences. They are both from the Jersey Marine area of Swansea. Pc Wozencroft, who joined South Wales Police in October last year from the Metropolitan Police, was a Bridgend divisional officer based at Maesteg. He was married with an 18-month-old daughter.
Pc Wozencroft suffered multiple injuries but a second officer who was in the car with him escaped with minor cuts and bruises. Car abandoned The Cavalier was later found abandoned nearby after also overturning. Police are still waiting to speak to the passenger of the police car to establish the full circumstances. They are appealing for witnesses to come forward. The divisional commander of Bridgend, acting superintendent Brian Greaves, said: "South Wales Police is extremely saddened by the death of Garry. "We have all been affected by this tragic incident, in particular his colleagues within the Bridgend division. "On behalf of the force, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends, particularly his wife and parents." 'Better life' The married officer quit the Metropolitan Police two years ago for a "better life" for his wife and baby in the Welsh countryside. Pc Wozencroft joined the Metropolitan Police in 1988 after serving as a special constable in his home town of Neath, south Wales. He married his wife Ceri and when she became pregnant the couple decided to move back to Wales. Their daughter Ellie was born 18 months ago and relatives say Pc Wozencroft doted on her. A family spokesman said: "It is heartbreaking. Garry wanted to come back to Wales for a better quality of life. Family man "He was highly regarded as a policeman in London but he was also a family man and wanted the best for his little girl." Pc Wozencroft received an official commendation after discovering an IRA bomb in central London. He quickly evacuated the area and called for support to prevent a potential tragedy. Pc Wozencroft was also commended for providing intelligence that led to the arrest of a number of suspects. He was commended again for his professionalism while on duty during the funeral of the Princess of Wales in 1997. Flags at police stations across south Wales have been flying at half mast in tribute to him. |
