Arcade evacuated over smoke alert

A city centre shopping arcade was evacuated at lunchtime after smoke was seen emerging from a shoe shop.

Shoppers were asked to leave Queen's Arcade in Cardiff after smoke was seen coming the shop called Shuropody.

Cardiff Council said an electrical fault in ducting in the basement of the arcade was responsible.

South Wales Fire Service sent three fire engines, one hydraulic platform and a water bowser to the scene as a precaution.

The call was received just after 1400 BST on Friday.

About an hour and a half later, Steve Wilcox from Queen's Arcade said it was re-opening.

He said at any one time there is about 200 to 300 staff working there.
