School closure proposal delayed

A village primary school which had been threatened with closure has been given a 12-month-reprieve.

Ysgol Syr John Rhys in Ponterwyd in Ceredigion had been expected to close this year after a decision by the council's cabinet.

But campaigners asked for a delay to allow plans for new homes to be built in the area to be considered which would boost pupil numbers.

The decision about the closure will be reviewed next year.

The decision is now expected to go before the cabinet as a recommendation in July.

Around 30 supporters of the school formed a picket at the meeting which was held on Tuesday morning.
