The new body would reflect the range of arts in Wales
A radical plan for a new body to promote arts, culture and sport in Wales will be discussed in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The post-16 education committee - which has spent the last few months conducting a review of the arts - will hear the proposal to create a new cultural consortium for Wales.

Called Creu Cymru, the body is being proposed by the Assembly's expert advisor Ceri Sherlock.

The organisation would be chaired by an Assembly Secretary with a particular portfolio for culture.

Embracing the arts

It would include the Arts Council of Wales along with bodies such as the National Library, Welsh Language Board, broadcasters and the Welsh Development Agency.

The breadth of membership of the proposed body - which also includes museums and the Sports Council for Wales - reflects a desire that the consortium mirrors the culture of Wales in all forms, not just the arts.

Meanwhile, the Welsh National Opera has responded to opera goers who have complained to the company about cuts in performances in two English cities.

'Sympathy'

Anthony Freud, general director of WNO, said the company had nothing but sympathy for opera goers in Liverpool and Plymouth.

Liverpool's two weeks of performances will be cut to one while Plymouth will lose its sole week of main-scale WNO performances.

Mr Freud said the funds made available to the WNO by the Arts Council of England were insufficient to maintain a full programme of work.
