Music venue needs sound proofing

A new live music venue in Cardiff is having to undertake remedial sound work only months after it opened following an order from the city's council.

The Globe opened its doors in Albany Road, Roath, in November, and is aiming to host live music seven nights a week.

However, the council had to issue a noise abatement notice to the venue, which borders residential streets.

The Globe management said it was "doing everything in our power to avoid any disturbances to our local residents".

The venue was formerly a cinema.

Last month, the well-established music venue The Point in Butetown was forced to seek voluntary liquidation after it had suffered problems, including noise issues with neighbours.

The Point had to spend £50,000 on sound insulation when it received complaints from a few people who had moved into new flats built next to the venue.

The venue said the cost of the insulation work combined with lost revenue while the work was carried out and current trading conditions had forced the closure.

The Globe has taken over hosting some of the acts which were due to play at The Point, and later this month actor Rhys Ifans' band The Peth will perform there.

The Globe management said in a statement: "The Globe are aware of the issues that The Point have had over the past few months and are very conscious of ourselves being in a residential area.

"We are doing everything in our power to avoid any disturbances to our local residents."

A spokeswoman for Cardiff council's environment said the noise abatement issue was served requiring the venue to "adequately control the volume of the music so that it does not materially interfere with the use and enjoyment of neighbouring accommodation".

She added: "Cardiff council's noise pollution team are working closely with the venue and their consultants on sound insulation measures."
