Snowdon walker is rescued in gale

Snowdon
The walker was heading for the summit of Snowdon

A walker who was trapped on a snow and ice covered Snowdon cliff has been rescued uninjured in a gale.

Despite showers of snow and hail an RAF rescue helicopter based at Valley on Anglesey managed to pluck the man, in his 30s and from Huddersfield.

He managed to summon help on his mobile after becoming cragfast just below the mountain's Crib Goch ridge.

Rescuers said the man had not been wearing crampons although he did have an ice axe with him.

The man had set off at 0630 GMT on Sunday intending to reach the summit of Snowdon but got into difficulties as conditions worsened.

A spokesman for Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team who turned out to help the walker said although he had an ice axe he was not wearing crampons, and this caused him to lose his footing.
