A free drink is on offer for every goal against England
A south Wales pub has come under fire from race equality campaigners for offering free beer every time a goal is scored against England in Euro 2000.

Drinkers in the Castle Square pub, Swansea, will be handed a free bottle of lager each time Kevin Keegan's men let in a goal. That meant three free rounds during England's defeat by Portugal.

But the pub's offer has landed managers in trouble with the Commission for Racial Equality Wales, which claims it could fuel anti-English feeling.

CRE Commissioner for Wales Ray Singh said: "It appears to be light-hearted because there is a rivalry between Wales and England.

"But there are a lot of English people living in Swansea and throughout Wales.

"These sorts of things can be misinterpreted and get out of hand, particularly if lots of beer is drunk.

"Although it is intended to be light-hearted, it may not be wise."

Pub manager Chris Teague defended the offer, saying: "Many Welsh fans won't need any encouragement to cheer on England's rivals.

"I am sure that we will have a pub full each game rooting for the opposing team.

"A free bottle will taste even nicer if England go 1-0 down," he added.
