A swimming pool which closed after elevated levels of legionella bacteria were found in the shower water has re-opened more than a week later.

The shower system at Bangor swimming pool in Gwynedd was disinfected after the centre was closed last Monday.

The council said tests performed following the clean indicated the issue had been dealt with.

The National Public Health Service said it had not received reports of illness in people who had used the facility.

The bacteria can cause Legionnaires' disease, a rare form of pneumonia, most often contracted by inhaling mist from water sources.

It cannot be passed from one person to another.

A Gwynedd council spokesperson thanked pool users for their patience during the pool closure.

"Ensuring the safety of all members of the public who use the council's swimming pools and leisure centres is our main priority," said the spokesperson.

"Since the closure of the pool remedial measures have been undertaken including thorough disinfection.

"Further tests have indicated that the problem has been addressed, and on the basis of appropriate professional advice, we have now re-opened the facility."
