Three likely to put their names forward
The race is on to succeed Dafydd Wigley as President of Plaid Cymru.

Three party figures have made it clear they are considering putting their names forward.

But the heavy workload which prompted Mr Wigley's resignation has sparked debate about whether to split the role of president and Assembly leader.

No one has yet openly declared they want to succeed Mr Wigley, following his announcement on Wednesday that he was resigning on health grounds.

But on Thursday, Euro MP Jill Evans said she was thinking favourably of throwing her hat in the ring.

Llanelli AM Helen Mary Jones has confirmed she is considering the same, while front-runner Ieuan Wyn Jones has confirmed he intends to make a statement early next week.

Meirionydd MP Elfyn LLwyd and party chairman Marc Phillips have both ruled themselves out.

Mr Phillips said the election would be an opportunity for the party.

"I am anticipating that it will be contested and that it will engage the party in a very constructive dialogue about its future," he said.

"That should be a very interesting discussion but also one I hope will unite the party."

Nominations were opened on Thursday and will close at the end of the month.

Polling - one member one vote - will take place in late July with the result is expected by early August.
