Second OAP dies as driver is held

The second of two women pensioners knocked down in a street has also died in hospital.

Gwent Police said the first woman, Doreen Morgan, 74, of Cwmbran, died shortly after the incident which happened in the town at about 1225 BST.

The second woman, aged 73, who was also from Cwmbran, died at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, on Friday evening.

Officers said an 81-year-old Cwmbran man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

The incident occurred on Llandowlaid Street in the Oakfield area of the town.

Inspector Lee Ford, who is leading the investigation, said the car driver, who was uninjured, remains in police custody.

He said: "This is a tragic incident for all concerned and our thoughts go to the family of the deceased. A full and thorough investigation will take place."

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and call them on 01633 838 111 or to call the force's collision investigation unit on 01633 643 091.
