Parrot fever can be severe and cause death
A family doctor from north Wales is one of four people who contracted a rare illness known as 'parrot fever'.

Dr Mererid Owen from Caernarvon has now recovered from the illness and has assured patients that there is no danger of infection.

Dr Mererid Owen's daughter was given two budgies which had been bought at the Focus Do It All store in Bangor.

It was after one of the birds died that Dr Owen was diagnosed with illness also called psittacosis.

An investigation is underway to establish whether or not the Focus Do It All store in Bangor is connected with the cases.

An employee and three members of the public have been treated for the rare illness which can be fatal.

The store has quarantined all its birds as a precautionary step and tests on the birds have proved negative for the disease.

Dr Owen said she can assure her patients that there is no danger of cross-contamination between people.

She is now calling on all pet stores to advise customers to seek medical advice if birds they have die.

A helpline has been set up for anyone worried about the infection - 01352 759237.
