A tribute has been paid to one of two teenage friends killed when their car was in collision with a lorry.

Geraint "Eddy" Morris, 18, from Hengoed, was driving the Ford Fiesta car and friend Gareth Phelps, 17, from Gelligaer, was a front seat passenger.

A statement said Geraint had "many friends" and leaves behind a "grieving family".

A third person was critically hurt in the crash at 1530 BST on Thursday on the A4048 Tredegar to Blackwood road.

Geraint, who would have turned 19 next month, worked as a labourer for a local building firm after leaving Lewis Boys School in Pengam.

In a statement his family, who have lived in the Nelson, Treharris, Cascade and Hengoed areas, said Geraint was affectionately known as Eddy, a nickname given to him by his parents Carol and Kevin.

"Eddy leaves behind a grieving family and a thoughtful, kind girlfriend, Casey, and many friends," said the family.

They said he had been driving his second car, a silver Ford Fiesta Zetec, which he "loved and cherished".

"Sadly, this car, driven by Geraint was in collision with an articulated lorry on September 4 and he died at the scene, along with his friend Gareth Phelps and another friend was critically injured," said the family.

The lorry driver was arrested and later released without charge.

The road at Argoed was closed for several hours while police investigations took place.

Witnesses should contact Gwent Police on 01633 838111 or the Collision Investigation Unit on 01633 643091.
