Petrol on BBQ causes man's burns

Safety warnings have been issued after a man suffered burns to his upper body after his clothes caught fire when petrol was put onto a gas barbeque.

North Wales Fire Service was called to an address in Caia Park, Wrexham at around 2300 BST on Saturday night.

A 25-year-old man was found with injuries to his upper body and he was taken to hospital in ambulance.

He was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital for treatment to his injuries which are not described as life threatening.

Firefighters found that charcoal and petrol was used on the barbecue because the gas was running out.

It caused a fire to flare from the barbecue and the man's vest caught fire causing injuries to his chest abdomen, arms and hands.

John Berry, Station Manager at Wrexham said: "Using petrol on a barbeque is very dangerous practise and this man is lucky not to have suffered extremely serious burns.

"Having a barbeque should be a safe and enjoyable experience, however the consequences of not paying attention to a few safety rules can be catastrophic."

Firefighters were due to visit the the Caia Park area on Sunday, to distribute leaflets and issue barbeque and fire safety advice to local residents.
