Blaze hits metal recycling plant

About 200 tonnes of household waste including toasters and vacuum cleaners have caught fire at a metal recycling plant in Newport.

40 firefighters with six engines are tackling the blaze at Asset International Ltd in Alexandra Docks.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at 0119 BST on Thursday and at the fire's height 60 firefighters were at the scene.

The blaze is now under control and nobody has been injured.

The company is bringing diggers on to the site to move scrap metal so that firefighters can get to any hotspots underneath.

Police and an ambulance also attended the blaze as a precaution.
