Police are appealing for information on two men wanted for an attempted robbery at a post office in Llangynwyd, near Maesteg, south Wales on Tuesday.

At around 0915 BST one man walked into the post office, doused the counter in an unknown liquid and demanded money from the postmaster.

A customer who intervened was assaulted and had his wallet stolen by the second man after the struggle moved outside.

Forensic tests are being carried out on the abandoned getaway car.

Det Insp Jason Redrup from Bridgend CID said the local man had "bravely" intervened in the raid.

He added both suspects left the scene in a purple Volkswagen Golf convertible.

The car was discovered on fire at 0935 BST at Oak Terrace, Coytrahen, Bridgend.

The first suspect who went into the post office is described as white, 6ft (1.8m) tall, of stocky build and wearing a light coloured hooded jacket.

The second suspect, who was driving the getaway car, is described as white, 5ft 6in (1.7m) tall, in his 20s, of stocky build, clean shaven, and was wearing a dark baseball cap with a motif on the front and a dark zipper jacket.

"The actions of these men threatening to set fire to the counter and assaulting the innocent bystander are particularly nasty," said Det Insp Redrup.

"Our investigation is on-going. I would appeal for anyone with information to contact us.

"We are particularly keen for information on the Golf convertible which we know was stolen from the Cefn Glas area the previous night.

"We need to know of any sightings of the vehicle from midnight on Monday until 0920 BST on Tuesday."

Detectives are continuing to check CCTV in the area and tests are being carried out on the liquid that was thrown over the counter.

A 27-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has been released without charge.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bridgend CID on 01656 679518 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
