A bakery in the south Wales valleys has announced 55 job losses after applying to go into administration.

Best Bakeries, based in Hirwaun, said Ferrari's Fresh Bakery Ltd and its 60 shops would continue trading, with 42 workers remaining at the headquarters.

A spokesman said: "Business will continue in these shops as usual."

The firm, which took over the business last year, said it made the decision "with regret" and was continuing to work through its problems.

"The management of Best Bakeries is continuing to work through its problems whilst talking to creditors to address what is a temporary situation.

"We feel that we will be able to continue to supply the shops in all of its products and feel that the company, bakery and the shops has a future in south Wales and the staff and management will endeavour that everything is done to continue this operation."

The news was broken earlier by the Bakers Food and Allied Workers' Union, which said it had been told the company had cashflow problems.

Cynon Valley Labour AM Christine Chapman called the news a "devastating blow" for all those involved and said she had contacted the Welsh economic development minister.

"We must all pull together to help those who are facing an uncertain future," she said.

Plaid Cymru AM Chris Franks said his office had spoken to the company, who confirmed 40 workers had been retained.

"I hope that Welsh Economic Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones will be able to have discussions with the company to see what is the best way forward," he said.

Best Bakeries took over the Ferrari's business last year, two months after the previous owners themselves went into administration.
