Strong winds wreck campsite tents

Watch the devastation after winds hit a north Wales campsite.

Up to 300 tents were wrecked and one camper hurt after strong winds tore through a Gwynedd campsite.

The Shell Island campsite near Barmouth opened an emergency shelter in its bar area as the winds struck on Sunday evening.

Co-owner Richard Workman said the campsite had around 3,000 people staying on Sunday evening, some of whom ended up sleeping on the bar floor.

He estimated around £150,000 worth of damage had been caused.

Mr Workman added: "The ambulance service was called out three times on Sunday night. One lad was knocked by a pole as he was trying to save his tent."

He said around 500 families left the site on Bank Holiday Monday, many having lost their tents completely.

Wales Ambulance Service said paramedics treated a male person at the scene for an eye injury after he was believed to have been hit by a tent pole.
