Island tragedy for engaged couple

A woman from Denbighshire who collapsed and died in Cyprus just an hour after celebrating her engagement had suffered a heart attack, say police.

Nerys Lloyd-Crabtree, who was 52 from St Asaph, fell ill suddenly on the island on Monday.

She was returning to her hotel room in the resort of Paphos which is in the south west of the island.

It was initially thought she may have suffered injuries after falling, but that has now been ruled out.

Ms Lloyd-Crabtree and fiancé John Cameron had just arrived on the island and were celebrating their engagement.

Local journalist Mike Theodolou said he had spoken to Ms Lloyd-Crabtree's fiance about what happened.

Mr Theodolou said the couple had only arrived in the holiday resort earlier on Monday.

'Delirious with happiness'

They were watching some evening entertainment in their hotel when the song The Lion King, Ms Lloyd-Crabtree's favourite, was played, and Mr Cameron asked for it to be repeated.

"In front of all the people he proposed to her and she said 'yes'.

"When they went back to their seats they were delirious with happiness. They had a drink; they were discussing the future," added Mr Theodolou.

"The show ended about 45 minutes after he had proposed and they left to walk back to their hotel room.

"As they were walking John told me that she tripped and fell on her back and hit her head and she was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival."

A spokesman for Cyprus police said a post-mortem examination showed Ms Lloyd-Crabtree died of a heart attack. .

Tributes have been paid to her by colleagues at the James Pringle Weaver store on Anglesey where she was the general manager.

Staff at the Llanfairpwll store described her as a "lovely person" who would be greatly missed.
