Police say a car thief who absconded from an open prison in Monmouthshire a week ago has been returned to custody.

Matthew Woodland, 23, who is from Bristol, absconded from HMP Prescoed on Wednesday 2 April.

He was sentenced to four months by North Avon magistrates in March for the theft of a vehicle and making off without payment.

Gwent Police said on Wednesday that Woodland had been returned to the custody of the prison service.
