Inquests opened on two teenagers

Inquests have opened into the deaths of two teenagers from Bridgend county who are believed to have killed themselves.

Nathaniel Pritchard, 15, from Bridgend, died two days after "harming himself" after sending his ex-girlfriend a message he was going to kill himself.

The body of Jenna Parry, 16, who had a history of self-harm, was found on common land in Cefn Cribwr.

Seventeen young people have apparently killed themselves in the area since January 2007.

The coroner's court in Merthyr Tydfil heard Nathaniel, of Ystrad Fawr, Cefn Glas, in Bridgend, had recently broken up with his girlfriend after eight months.

On Wednesday, 13 February, he had had a conversation with the girl via the internet messaging service MSN in the evening, Det Insp Jason Redrup told the inquest.

He ended the conversation with the message: "I'm going to kill myself."

The girl called his home shortly afterwards, where Nathaniel was found hanging. He was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend but died on Friday.

Bridgend coroner Philip Walters said the provisional cause of death was multiple organ failure and hanging.

A separate inquest at Merthyr for Jenna Parry heard from Det Insp Redrup that she had also recently split up from her partner and had found it "difficult to accept that".

Jenna had a history of self-harm and had previously attempted to take her life on at least two occasions by taking overdoses.

She had also taken cannabis and prescription drugs. Hanging was given as a provisional cause of death.

The inquests were adjourned to a later date.
