Katie Morris was described as 'a lovely child'

A school is to hold a memorial service for a 10-year-old pupil who choked to death as she ate Sunday lunch.

Doctors were unable to save Katie Morris, from Cwmllynfell, in the Swansea Valley, and her family is said to be "inconsolable".

South Wales Police said they understood Katie had died from choking and they were not treating her death on 1 July as suspicious.

The service will be held at Katie's school in her home village on Friday.

Ann Szulik, head teacher of Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Draddodiadol Cwmllynfell, said: "We are extremely saddened at the heartbreaking news of the tragic and untimely death of one of our pupils.

"Katie Morris was a valued member of year five and was known for her uncomplaining nature and her ability to work with others.

"It was a pleasure to see Katie's enjoyment of life when taking her on visits and her delight when participating in live theatre.

"Her special talent for dance was admired by all who knew her".

Ms Szulik said it was a "very difficult time for pupils."

Katie lived with her mother Louise, grandmother and sister Lorraine, 15, and spent weekends with her father Peter in nearby Pontardawe.

'Lovely child'

Family friend Rita Buchan told the South Wales Evening Post :"She was just eating her Sunday lunch when a piece of meat became stuck - it is such a tragedy.

"It is absolutely devastating - her parents are still in shock."

Ms Buchan described Katie as a "lovely child" who had recently started belly dancing and also did gymnastics.

Karl Napieralla, Neath Port Talbot Council's education director said they were "saddened and shocked at this tragic accident".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and everyone at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Draddodiadol Cwmllynfell at this difficult time."

Family friends and neighbours attended a service at Katie's home on Tuesday and many of her school friends were also at a later service at Morriston Crematorium.
