Tory anger over Sinn Fein visit
![]() Assembly Members were urged to condemn the visit
Plans for a Sinn Fein delegation to visit the Welsh Assembly have provoked anger among Conservative members.
Representatives from Sinn Fein are expected to arrive at the Assembly on Wednesday in a bid to get Welsh backing for their campaign to close the Sellafield nuclear waste reprocessing plant.
But during First Secretary's Questions, Conservative AM David Davies condemned the visit and said he would not meet the Sinn Fein delegates unless the party "apologises for the murders of hundreds of British soldiers, politicians and members of the public".
"Sinn Fein are no more than the mouth-piece for butchers and thugs," he said and called on other parties to condemn the visit. First Secretary Rhodri Morgan said he was unaware of the visit, but the Wales Labour Party said later that it had no objections to back-bench Labour AMs meeting Sinn Fein.
The spokesman said that with Tony Blair meeting Sinn Fein representatives regularly in Downing Street, Labour could not to object to meetings at this level.
A spokesman for Plaid Cymru said that none of their members had plans to meet the delegation. He admitted that an invitation had been received but no plans had been made, although it was unclear if individual AMs had been approached. The Sinn Fein delegation is being led by former European Parliament candidate Arthur Morgan.
