£1.1m Lotto winner's Disney dream
Joanne Gilbert
Ms Gilbert says she will not be moving, despite her big win
A grandmother from south Wales has said she will realise her childhood dream of visiting Disneyland in America after winning £1.1m on the National Lottery.

But Joanne Gilbert, 47, from Abertillery, has vowed to remain in her home in the former mining community.

The laundry factory worker has also not yet decided whether to give up work.

Ms Gilbert, who is single, first realised she had become a millionaire on Saturday while staying in a caravan with her five-year-old grandson Rhys.

Ms Gilbert won £1,146,172 after her six numbers - 11, 17, 24, 28, 41 and 47 came up during Saturday's Lotto draw.

These numbers, chosen from a mixture of family birthdays, had been used by Ms Gilbert since the lottery started.

She has now started planning her trip to Disneyland in California, which will be her first trip abroad in almost 30 years.

"I play without fail every week, even if it's the last pound in my purse," said Ms Gilbert, who has a son Marcus, 31.

"I went to see my friends, Kay and Tony, who stay in the caravan pitch next to mine, and we all just stood there looking at the ticket in disbelief.

Circumstances haven't been right for her but she will certainly have her trip of a lifetime.

"The win still hasn't sunk in, and I'll need to think very carefully about what I want to do with the money, but one thing that has always been at the top of my list is a trip to Disneyland in America - I'm a big kid really.

"My mum and dad are so pleased and excited for me, the whole thing is just unbelievable."

Ms Gilbert, who works at Llanfecha Grange Hospital in Cwmbran, South Wales, has vowed to remain at her house in Abertillery.

Her father Lionel Strickland said they had always wanted to see their daughter settled and the money would make her future secure.

Jackpot winners

He said: "We will keep her feet firmly on the ground and she will make her trip to America which she has always wanted since she was 12.

"Circumstances haven't been right for her but she will certainly have her trip of a lifetime."

There have been five jackpot winners from south east Wales in the last year, three of them in the last three months.

The last winner, Jennifer Southall, a single mother of three from the Ringland Estate in Newport, won £8,372,751 in the Easter Saturday Lotto draw.
