Keeping up with the Joneses

Wales v Italy Six Nations
Amazingly there are no Joneses in the current Welsh squad

A rugby match being played this weekend will be the referee's nightmare - 12 members of one squad are all called Jones.

Bala Rugby Club from Gwynedd in north Wales are travelling to Cardiff for a cup clash with Fairwater with a dozen Joneses in the squad.

To complicate matters further, their opponents have four Morgans in their team - three of those with first names beginning with the letter D.

Bala second-row player Dilwyn Morgan admitted it was unusual to have so many Joneses in one team - a situation which sometimes caused problems.

Nicknames

"There are so many Joneses it gets us confused, so we have nicknames," said the 42-year-old.

"It's a common name around here, but it's still unusual to have so many in one side."

Mr Morgan said 10 of the 12 Joneses in the squad were in the starting line-up of 15 players for tomorrow's match.

And all seven backs will be called Jones.

Four Morgans

Ray Hobby, treasurer of Fairwater Rugby Club, said he was amazed when Bala sent him their team list for the game.

He said: "When I read the paper I couldn't believe it. Talk about keeping up with the Joneses."

Mr Hobby said that - compared to Bala - his own side's four Morgans posed few problems.

Both teams said they expected the Worthington Welsh Districts Cup quarter-final match to be a tough game.

The final of the competition - an all-Wales contest for lower division sides - will be held at Cardiff's newly-built Millennium Stadium.
