Delay over kidney blunder report

Prince Philip Hospital The operation took place at Prince Philip Hospital 25 days ago

A report into why a surgical team removed a patient's healthy kidney by mistake could take a fortnight to be made public.

Graham Reeves, 69, from Burry Port, underwent the bungled operation at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli last month.

He remains in a critical condition and has not regained consciousness.

Two separate investigations were ordered - one by Carmarthenshire NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, and another by two representatives from the Royal College of Surgeons.

Hospital managers had initially promised that the reasons for the blunder would be made public as soon as possible.

Now it is understood it will probably be another fortnight before any details are released.

This is because legal advice may be needed, plus talks with the National Assembly, before the public is told exactly what went wrong.

Three doctors connected with the operation - registrar M C Gowel, consultant John Roberts and senior house officer Adhanareswaran Umashanka - have been suspended.

The RCS investigation is headed by surgeons Fletcher Deane, president of the British Association of Urological Surgeons, and Keith Parsons, chief executive of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital NHS Trust.
