The family of a 20-year-old Bridgend man who died after an attack in the town's railway station car park have described him as a "gentle giant".

Police have launched a murder inquiry over the death of Ryan Leigh Edwards who was attacked on Friday evening.

Mr Edwards' parents, Alan and Debbie Edwards, said he was a "much loved son, grandson, brother, cousin, and friend".

Detectives are questioning three men in custody on suspicion of the murder of Mr Edwards, who died on Sunday evening.

In a statement issued through South Wales Police, his parents said: "He was a fun, amazing, wonderful, and devoted son."

They said their son had attended Cymer Afan Comprehensive School and then Neath College.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the lead-up to the fatal attack which happened at 2310 BST on Friday.

Officers also want to trace the driver of a red Toyota Yaris car parked in the car park at the time of the assault, and who may have been a witness.

Detectives said there may have been a number of altercations leading up to the attack, in which two other men were assaulted, one suffering serious facial injuries and the other minor injuries.

'Hoody top'

Officers believe there may have been an initial altercation involving two groups of men at Bar Inc, on Derwen Road, sometime between 1900 BST and 2300 BST.

They said a group of around seven men left the venue at just before 2300 BST, and were followed by another group of men to the railway station.

Speaking on Monday, Det Sup Paul Kemp said: "We would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the assault at the train station.

"In particular, I'm keen to trace two young men, one was wearing a 'hoody' top and the other was wearing a cap.

"We would also like to talk to a young male who was on a bicycle and who lent his mobile phone to the group of seven men."

The two other men who were assaulted have since been discharged from the town's Princess of Wales Hospital.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 01656 306099 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
