The BBC Weather Centre has said an "extraordinary" amount of rain has fallen in north Wales overnight.

Between 1200 GMT on Sunday and 0700 GMT on Monday, 11.4cm (4.4 in) had fallen at the weather station in Capel Curig, Snowdonia.

A motorist had to be rescued after becoming trapped in floodwater on Monday morning.

He was forced to abandon his car on the A487 Dyfi Bridge in Machynlleth, Powys after being reached by firefighters.

According to the weather centre Capel Curig in Snowdonia was one of the wettest places in Wales over the last 24 hours.

The total rainfall so far this month has been 34.4cm (13.5 inch) which is more than the December average of 29.8cm (11.7 inch)

'More rain'

The Environment Agency has said there are currently nine Flood Warnings and 23 Flood Watches in force .

According to BBC weatherman, Derek Brockway more rain and strong winds are on the way over the next few days with a risk of more flooding.

"As for the outlook, unsettled for the rest of the week. It will be mild but windy with more rain," he said.

"More rain clouds are gathering in the Atlantic and heading our way

"Most of the rain will be in the north and west with a risk of flooding. However, it should cheer-up next weekend.

"It will turning colder but much drier and brighter with some sunshine."

Heavy rain is thought to have caused a landslide which closed a stretch of the A470 in Gwynedd for a period during Sunday evening and Monday morning.

The slide occurred one mile north of Mallwyd between Machynlleth and Dolgellau. The road has now reopened.

Network Rail said the Conwy Valley line between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog was still closed following the flooding last week.

They are waiting for the river levels to drop before saying when the line will reopen.
