Parents campaign for dyslexia action

Classroom The campaign group is seeking action from Flintshire council

A petition is being launched in north Wales by parents who claim their dyslexic children are being discriminated against in schools.

Parents want a government inquiry into Flintshire Education Authority's dyslexic education policy.

They claim children are suffering from emotional and psychological problems because their needs are not being met.

We want signatures of parents who are fed up with Flintshire authority causing problems rather than solving them
Campaigner Heather McCormick

Heather McCormick, co-founder of Flintshire Parent Support, is heading calls on Tuesday evening Deeside Enterprise Centre for action to be taken.

Campaigners will be starting a petition which they plan to take to the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, at 10 Downing Street.

"I have taken one child out of school, my other daughter is taught privately, at my own expense," said Mrs McCormick.

'Adequate support'

"I wanted adequate support for my children - which they did not get - and appropriate teaching skills.

"We want signatures of parents who are fed up with Flintshire authority causing problems rather than solving them."

Mrs McCormick said she was concerned that the authority would not release information to parents about the numbers of pupils who have special needs statements.

She said the aim of the campaign meeting is to voice the concerns of parents and to lobby MPs, councillors and organisations to make them accountable for their actions.
