Hurdler Jackson's OBE honour

Colin Jackson Australian Olympic gold beckons to Colin Jackson

World 110metres hurdles record holder Colin Jackson has been rewarded with an OBE in the New Year's honours.

It was a fitting award for Cardiff-born Jackson, who beat the finest high hurdlers from around the globe when winning both the World indoor and outdoor gold medals.

The award will almost certainly inspire the Welsh dragon to greater achievements in the millennium where his burning ambition is to win the Olympic crown in Sydney.

After his epic 1999 season, victory in Sydney would elevate him into the illustrious British athletics hall of fame where he would join Linford Christie, Daley Thompson and Sally Gunnell as the holder of the 'grand slam' of Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth gold medals.

'I've got what it takes'

Jackson makes no secret of his desire to win the ultimate sporting honour.

After finishing third in the recent BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, the 32-year-old star said: "It is important that I win it (the Olympics), because if you've got the credentials to do something then it's a terrible waste if you don't achieve it.

"I've got what it takes to be Olympic champion, so why shouldn't I be?

" I shouldn't let myself off the hook by saying 'Oh well, you've had a tremendous career, it doesn't matter if you don't win it'.

"Why should I let myself off when I can win gold? I'm going to do it."
