A blues guitarist invited to earn 12,000 for a millennium show in Tahiti has turned it all down to stay at home in west Wales.

Todd Sharpville gave up the chance of playing with old friend Big Joe Turner at the prestigious concert to be with his family in Milford Haven.

New Year's Eve in the port town seemed the better option over the sun, sea and surf of the South Seas island on the Millennium Eve.

Now he is blocking out the lure of his biggest pay day with thoughts of his wife Jane giving birth in four weeks' time.

"That has taken top priority," he said.

"There is no way my family could travel with me to Tahiti."

The former Blues Guitarist of the Year moved to west Wales to get away from London.

"I came west specifically to get used to the idea of being a dad before going back on the road."

Mr Sharpville said he interpreted his wife saying 'go to the gig' as a way of saying 'stay home'.

"Sod's Law, the money would have paid off the credit card bills, but I probably would have been in the same boat in six months' time!"

Mr Sharpville has taken over promoting blues nights in Narberth and Big Joe Turner has already graced a blues night in the town.

He plans to showcase Georgie Fame and The Fabulous Bluebirds in Narberth next year.
