Assembly demands drama funding explanation
committee Assembly members want an explanation of the controversial plans

A row over drama funding has led the Assembly to demand an explanation of its strategy from the Arts Council of Wales.

In Wednesday's meeting of the Post-16 Education Committee, members voted to focus their attention on the controversial drama strategy of the council.

The council has faced fierce criticism for its proposed funding of theatre groups, some of which may face closure as a result.

Tom Middlehurst AM Tom Middlehurst argued there was a misunderstanding
The vote went against the wishes of the Arts and Culture Secretary Tom Middlehurst.

The Arts Council was already scheduled to give evidence on 19 January, as part of the Assembly's arts and culture policy review.

Conservative Jonathan Morgan supported Mr Middlehurst's argument that combining the drama strategy with a general discussion of the arts would "muddy the waters."

Mr Middlehurst warned that opinions on this issue were based on a lot of misunderstandings, and that an appeal process was currently underway.

Despite these warnings, the committee voted to investigate both issues, subject to legal advice on the appeals process .
