Fresh lead in murder 36 years on
Detectives are expected to spend more than a week questioning a man in Israel about the murder of a prostitute near Cardiff more than 35 years ago. Patricia Simpson, 20, was found dumped down a mineshaft at a quarry in Pentrych, just outside the capital. She had been last seen in the docks area of Cardiff in October 1963. Her body was found a month later - she had been strangled with a chiffon scarf. South Wales Police have been re-examining the case over the last year. Now two officers are questioning a man in his 60s, who is originally from south Wales. He is currently in jail in Israel or an unrelated offence.
Detective Chief Superintendent Wynne Phillips, head of South Wales Police CID, said: "Our officers have been looking closely at the circumstances of Patricia Simpson's murder and have received information which has led us to question this man." "We always remain optimistic and I think this is a classic example that no murder inquiry is ever left and we will take it to the nth degree." Patricia Simpson's case is one of 14 unsolved murders which are to reviewed by a special team of detectives. It is hoped fresh evidence will be uncovered which could lead to killers. |
