Bridge re-opens ahead of schedule
Weeks of frustration for commuters are at an end

The Menai Suspension Bridge is due to re-open after being closed to motorists for nine weeks.

The bridge was shut for essential repairs, leaving just one route open across the Straits.

But commuters will once again be able to drive across the Thomas Telford-designed Menai Bridge, bringing to an end weeks of rush-hour traffic jams.

Fewer problems

The major works to the road deck have been completed a month ahead of schedule.

Favourable weather and 24 -hour working has meant fewer problems in removing the deck and renewing its steel structure than was originally anticipated.

Motorists travelling between Anglesey and the mainland faced major congestion as traffic was diverted over the Britannia Bridge - the only other crossing to the island - causing severe tailbacks at peak periods
