Germans challenge Cardiff for Tyson fight
Mike Tyson could fight in the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, in January

Boxing promoter Frank Warren is trying to bring former undisputed world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson to Wales for a fight despite a rival German bid.

The promoter is hoping to arrange the fight at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on January 15 but he faces competition from Germany where his opposite number Peter Kohl, backed by big television money, is doing his best to bring Tyson to Cologne.

The American cable network Showtime is interested in the deal, while Sky Television have signed Tyson in a four-fight agreement which began with his `no contest' against Orlin Norris.

It will be the first fight for Tyson since October 23 when Norris left the ring in the first round after injuring his right knee.

The Norris fight marked Tyson's return to the ring after a nine-month jail sentence for assaulting two motorists last year in Maryland.

After the furore of the Norris fight and recent controversies, commentators feel it is time for Tyson to fight in Europe.

"I'm trying to put it on," said Warren. "It would be great for Tyson to come to Wales and he would certainly draw a big crowd.

"When Tyson was in prison, he got a lot of mail from Britain.

"It would be one of the biggest amounts I've laid out on a promotion because we are talking about millions.

"I think it's a good idea for him to get away from the States for his next fight and, remember, Muhammad Ali did it years ago, and fought several times in Europe."
