Woman dies after fire at hospital

An investigation is under way after a 69-year-old woman died following a fire at in the Royal Glamorgan hospital.

Officers are treating the fire as suspicious and have arrested a 30-year-old man.

Three fire engines were called to the 540 bed hospital in Llantrisant, after reports of a fire in a cardboard bowl at around 0500 BST on Wednesday.

Police have stressed that the woman died of natural causes and that they are not linking it to the fire.

Six patients were evacuated to the safety of a nearby corridor but were later allowed to return after the smoke had cleared.

Police have confirmed that a 69-year-old female patient later died of natural causes. A spokesman said she had been quite unwell before the fire.

Investigations into her death are continuing.

While officers say they are not linking the death to the fire, they have confirmed they are treating the fire as suspicious.

The district general hospital, which serves the Rhondda and Pontypridd areas, has launched its own inquiry.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said they would be liaising with police to determine whether they would also investigate the fire.
