Match security high after alert

The Charity Shield is the first match of the UK football season
High visibility security has been in force for the FA Community Shield game at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff after this week's terror alert.

Stadium chiefs and police said there was no specific threat to the match between Liverpool and Chelsea, which Liverpool won 2-1.

But they warned fans who attended the match to be "extra vigilant".

Increased security remains at Cardiff International Airport and travellers are still experiencing delays.

The national threat level remains at "critical" after the disruption on Thursday of an alleged terror plot to blow up planes mid-flight.

Flights were departing from and arriving at Cardiff International Airport although there were delays to some outgoing and incoming flights on Saturday.

Passengers are still being advised to check with their airline before leaving for the airport, say police.

Millennium Stadium officials said they had been working closely with South Wales Police and the FA to carry out the necessary risk assessments ahead of Sunday's match.

Ch Supt Bob Evans, the South Wales Police event commander said: "Given the events of the last couple of days, security is forefront in all our minds.

"Let's be clear - there is no specific threat to south Wales, Cardiff or the Millennium Stadium - but we all need to be extra vigilant.

"We have a robust policing plan to ensure that all events run smoothly."

Restaurants, bars and shops opened from early on Sunday to welcome visitors, said Ch Supt Evans.

"We are continually liaising with out colleagues at the Millennium Stadium, other police forces and emergency services to ensure a co-ordinated response," he said.

"My advice to the public is to continue with their daily lives, just be vigilant and et us know if they become aware of anything that may cause them concern."
