'Bully' inquiry after boy's death

South Wales Police are investigating whether bullying could have been an element which helped lead to the death of a schoolboy on a railway line.

Officers say they are looking into all aspects surrounding the death of Jonathan Reynolds, 15, of Bridgend.

Witnesses reported seeing him walk on to the track at Pencoed, near Bridgend, and lie down in front of a passenger train on Wednesday evening.

Police said they would "leave no stone unturned" to find out what happened.

Jonathan, a year 11 pupil at Bryntirion Comprehensive School, Bridgend, left his home at about 1845 GMT on Wednesday and died less than two hours later.

Prayers have been said for Jonathan and his family at school, where police are planning to interview pupils.

Chief Insp Andy Morgan was quoted in the South Wales Echo as saying: "We will look into absolutely every aspect of Jonathan's life including whether he was being bullied.

"We want to try to find out what was troubling him so much.

"At the moment we are not aware of any tensions between pupils but we will leave no stone unturned."

Head teacher Alwyn Thomas said: "From all indications Jonathan was happy at school.

"He was a very, very happy and likeable pupil. We have no idea why this happened and we are eager to find out."

In a statement, Jonathan's parents Mark and Caroline Reynolds said words could not express their "shock and grief".

They described their son as "a much-loved, fun-loving and very bright young man who had an exciting future life ahead of him.

"For reasons not yet entirely clear, our beautiful son Jonathan decided to take his own life.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned by local coroner Philip Walters.

Police have asked anyone with information to call them on 01656 655555, or to contact their local police station.
