UK: Wales Girl footballer fights 'red card' ruling ![]() Caroline Hulme wants to get back on the pitch A talented 12-year-old girl footballer is at the centre of a row over whether she can play for a boy's team. Supporters of Caroline Hulme are lobbying the Football Association of Wales to change its rules so that she can turn out for Denbigh Town Under 13s.
They state girls aged 12 and over cannot play in mixed gender sports. Her family and supporters of the Under 13 team are fighting the ruling. Some 1,500 people in Denbigh have signed a petition calling for the ban to be lifted. Chris Ruane, MP for the Vale of Clwyd, said he would be contacting Sports Minister Kate Hoey, the National Assembly and the Football Association of Wales.
Team manager Stuart Wynne said Caroline would have to travel 30-40 miles to play her soccer in a girls team. "There is nothing round here for her," he said. "Why should she miss out on part of her childhood? She wants to play football and she is not allowed."
A spokesman for the FAW said he could not comment on individual cases. He said the rules were in place and had to be enforced. |
