Call for morning-after pill in schools

Paediatrician wants morning-after pill stocked in schools

A leading Welsh paediatrician has called for the morning-after pill to be supplied by schools.

Dr Dewi Evans said the move would help cut down on the growing number of schoolgirl pregnancies.

The call follows the case of two 12-year-olds in South Yorkshire who are currently both expecting babies.

BBC Wales's Felicity Evans speaks to Dr Dewi Evans
Dr Evans, consultant paediatrician at Swansea's Singleton Hospital, said he realised the idea might upset parents.

Unwanted pregnancies

But he said easier access to the morning-after pill was better than dealing with the consequences of unwanted pregnancies.

Dr Evans said he wanted the pill - which works if taken within 36 hours of intercourse - to be stocked by nurses in comprehensive schools.

And he wanted youngsters to be guaranteed secrecy if they asked for the drug.

Director of education for Swansea County Council Gareth Williams said the idea had merit but that the subject was a sensitive one and needed to be treated carefully.
