UK: Wales Joint beef ban policy agreed to ![]() The joint approach means no immediate lifting of the ban The National Assembly is to follow a "co-ordinated UK approach" to lifting the ban on beef on the bone. Welsh Agriculture Secretary Christine Gwyther made the announcement, which immediately dashed any hopes the Assembly Cabinet could take a lead on the issue. Each of the farm ministers for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales agreed to the new joint approach at a meeting on Wednesday. They will now wait for a further review of the scientific evidence by chief medical officers before a decision is finally reached on whether to lift the ban. 'Desirable' The ministers say a co-ordinated UK approach is "desirable". Ministry of Agriculture officials said that the only chance of the ban being lifted by the Welsh administration first would be if the chief medical officers disagree vehemently. The other option would be for the minority Labour administration to be outvoted by Assembly Members. |
