Safety fears for day-hire water bikes

There is concern over inexperienced water bike riders

A move to stop hired water bikes being launched from council-run slipways is to be considered by a north Wales authority.

The proposal follows fears that some people who rent water bikes for the day are inexperienced and pose potential safety problems.

Conwy County Borough Council has already imposed policies to restrict the use of personal watercraft on its shores.

Insurance inspector

Officials have gone so far as to employ an inspector to ensure that those using its launch slipways at Victoria Pier in Colwyn Bay are fully insured.

Added to that, there are designated water bike lanes to ensure swimmers do not mix with watercraft users.

But there is still concern that inexperienced riders are taking to the sea having hired water bikes for the day.

Councillors, fearful that such day-users may pose a safety hazard to others, are to consider extending their current policies on personal watercraft.

The proposal would exclude those who have hired water bikes from using council owned facilities.
