Jobs lift for empty Halla plant

Halla was affected by the Korean economic crisis

The fork lift truck maker Lansing is to take over the empty Halla factory in the south Wales Valleys with the promise of new jobs.

BBC Wales's Ashleigh Crowter: "Several companies have expressed as interest in the site"
Production at the plant in Merthyr Tydfil stopped last year after Halla's business was affected by the economic crisis in Korea.

This came as a huge jobs blow to the town.

The German-owned company Lansing has now concluded a deal which will create 80 new jobs at the factory.

Halla was the first Korean company to set up a manufacturing operation in Wales.

The £17m investment, opened by the Queen, was heralded as a major turning point in the fortunes of an unemployment blackspot.

It promised more than 300 jobs and was a flagship for inward investment from Asia.

But within two years, production had stopped after a crisis in the Korean economy, and the factory has been empty ever since.

Operation transfer

Since then, several companies have expressed an interest in the site. But now, Lansing have decided to transfer their operation in Blackwood to the plant at Pentrebach.

A total of 250 people are currently employed by Lansing in south Wales - their jobs are being transferred to Merthyr, where the company is also looking to take on another 80 employees.
