UK: Wales Sherpa Nima treks to Snowdonia ![]() A stroll through Snowdonia for Sherpa Nima and Chris Falzon A sherpa from the Himalayas has travelled thousands of miles to Wales to learn more about national park management. Sherpa Nima is the man in charge of the massive Sagarmatha National Park which includes Mount Everest.
The scale of the task is enormous - Sagarmatha National Park is eight times the size of Snowdonia, which creates problems in itself. Thousands of visitors descend on the Himalayas each year, bringing with them huge litter mountains and intruding on local communities.
"They have to depend on the grazing lands for yaks." Charles Falzon, of the Centre of Protected Landscapes, said the Welsh mountain ranges and the Himalayas had shared interests. "There are things you notice from places around the world that feature very strongly, cultural and linguistic elements, tribal elements, that impinge on park management." Sherpa Nima departs Wales on Thursday and will return to the Himalayan monsoon season.
