Delays for road and rail commuters
M4 queues
Traffic queuing near Newport on the M4 on Monday
Commuters faced long delays in south Wales after a road accident on the M4 near Newport.

Gwent Police said a van crashed into the central reservation just before the Brynglas tunnels and that a lamppost had to be removed.

Meanwhile, rail passengers faced possible delays as a knock-on effect of the fatal train crash in Berkshire.

First Great Western has cancelled a number of morning services between Cardiff Central and London Paddington.

The road disruption was caused by a crash on the M4 eastbound at junction 26 around 0530 GMT which has led to long tailbacks for road commuters.

The van was removed but traffic queued back beyond Tredegar Park.

The force said the delays were likely to continue for several hours with queues possibly as far as junction 34 and are warning people to avoid the area if possible.

Meanwhile, First Great Western cancelled its 0830 GMT, 0930 GMT and 1155 GMT services from Cardiff Central to London Paddington.

Other services which will not run on Monday are at: 1230 GMT, 1255 GMT, 1555 GMT and 1755 GMT.

In addition, services between Swansea and London Paddington will make an extra stop, calling at Didcot Parkway.

Rail travellers are advised to contact National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 ahead of their trip.
