The woman is believed to have joined the M4 at junction 40
A woman has been charged with dangerous driving after allegedly travelling more than 20 miles the wrong way along the motorway in south Wales.

Motorists apparently had to swerved out of the vehicle's path along the M4 early on Sunday.

Police punctured the tyres of the car with a stinger device thrown across the motorway before it was stopped.

The woman is believed to have driven past several junctions.

The woman - who has not been named - was apparently spotted by motorists as she headed west on the eastbound carriageway.

Detectives believe the car joined the motorway junction 40 at Margam at about 0120 GMT.

Police cars on the correct carriageway shadowed the woman as she passed Llandarcy and headed round Swansea towards the end of the motorway at Pont Abraham where she was eventually stopped.

A woman is due to appear before Swansea magistrates on Thursday.
