A man has been arrested in connection with an hit-and-run incident which has left a 13-year-old girl fighting for her life.

The man is being questioned after Rachel Jones was struck by the car on the Aberdare bypass on Saturday, when she was returning home with friends.

She underwent emergency surgery at Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales, but remains in a critical condition with her parents at her hospital bedside.

Forensic experts are examining a Vauxhall Carlton which was found in the Treherbert area of the Rhondda.

The incident took place on the A4059 between Trecynon and Penywaun at Aberdare.

Inspector Andrew Germain, who is leading the investigation, said Rachel was with three friends crossing the carriageway at around 2030 GMT when she was struck.

An incident room has been set up at Trecynon Police Station - with 16 officers working on the investigation.

Family liaison specialists are with Rachel's parents at hospital.
