Folk singer clinches presidency
Dafydd Iwan
Dafydd Iwan is well known on the welsh folk circuit
Singer Dafydd Iwan, who has been Plaid Cymru's vice-president for the last three years, is a cult figure on the Welsh folk circuit .

Since 1962, he has composed and performed 200 songs on stage in Wales and around the world.

They cover a wide range of styles and subjects, and he has been described as "a country/folk/rock singer-songwriter with attitude".

Offstage, his daily job is director of the Sain recording company in north Wales.

He was the first candidate to bid for the presidency when Ieuan Wyn Jones announced he would be stepping down, and had been heavily involved in politics for many years

Dafydd Iwan was already the vice-president of the party
He was Plaid Cymru's parliamentary candidate for Anglesey in 1974, Conwy in the early eighties, and was then the north Wales European candidate in 1983.

He is also a Gwynedd councillor.

At the beginning of the presidential contest he described himself as a grassroots candidate, without close ties to the party's groups in either Westminster or Cardiff Bay.

He said his main aim was to concentrate on rebuilding the party.

As the new president, his challenge now will be to heal rifts within the party and reclaim its impressive gains from the 1999 election, which were all lost during the assembly election in May.
