The 60-page guide claims to provide parents with the definitive guide to Britain's top 1,000 state secondary and primary schools.

It contains revised results and the first league table for secondary schools taking account of October's A-level re-gradings.

Ranked at no. 80 in the in the British league table, the school is a bilingual comprehensive, teaching some subjects through the medium of Welsh.

It has a strong sporting tradition, and many former pupils have represented Wales at rugby and hockey.

Relationships

A 1997 school inspection concluded: "The A-level and GCSE results are well above county and national averages and among the highest in Wales.

"Good relationships characterise school life."

Welsh medium comprehensive Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf in Cardiff comes second in the list for Wales.

The school has seen a significant improvement in its national league table position, moving from the 193 position in 2001 to 120 this year.

It offers both A-levels and GNVQs, and all subjects are taught in Welsh.

New entry

Its facilities include a modern performing arts centre with a recording studio and upgraded technology workshops.

Llanidloes High School, ranked third in Wales, is a new entry into the national league table at 141.

The school has seen a steady rise in pupil numbers for the last six years and prides itself on its community links, strengthened by teacher placement in industry and work-experience schemes for pupils.

School positions in the Parent Power guide are based on this year's examination results.

The national and regional rankings are determined by the percentage of A and B grades obtained at A-level and the percentage of A* to C grades obtained at GCSE.
